Preseason 2012 to wins and losses.
National League East
We think
that the Philadelphia Phillies have the chance to win more games this
year than last, if their stellar stars, Ryan Howard and Chase Utley can
make it back to the field for the majority of the year. Without
them, they should still win the division. I'm not sure how good
most people think the pitching staff of this team was in 2011.
Think Top Ten of All-Time, Number 8 in fact, as the new chapter
in Stat Geek Baseball, the Best Ever Book
states in 2012. And this year's edition, with Jonathan Papelbon
in the bullpen instead of Ryan Madson, may have gotten better. A
lot will depend on whether Joe Blanton is back and healthy, or even if
Kyle Kendrick takes over the #5 starting job, but both should be able
to do what ace #4 Roy Oswalt did last year in his uneven season.
But can any of their division opponents contend given the injury
situation in Philly. Yes, although we're not as big a fan of the
upside of Miami as others are, and don't think the Braves lineup is
that good. We think both of those teams are vying to getting
above 0.500 for most of the season. For Washington, the building
blocks continue to stack, and with Strasburg back in the starting
rotation and Drew Storen at the back end of the bullpen, those are two
big blocks. Just think we're a year or two away from that team
winning 90 games. The Mets. 2015 seems a more likely
playoff target date than 2012.
National League Central
Those
Cardinals keep rolling along. It's hard to know just how badly
they will miss Albert Pujols. We think a whole lot, but the
Cardinals have done a good job of filling in the pieces around that,
and if Adam
Wainwright can rebound to anywhere near the form of two seasons ago, it
should be another playoff year for St. Louis. Can Carlos Beltran
replace the production of Pujols? No. Can Wainwright and
the pitching staff make up for it? Maybe. It is wasn't for
the loss of Prince Fielder in Milwaukee, we might have more concerns
about the Cardinals and their chances. But we think the Cardinals
will win the division this year, with Milwaukke getting a wild card
spot.
The Pirates are another young team building for the future, so to us,
its the Reds who could wrest control in the central if any of the other
four teams can. A lot will depend on whether they're pitching can
hold up better than it did in 2011. We're gonna miss the Houston
Astros when they leave the National League. It's doubtful that
many will miss watching this year's edition of the old Colt 45s in 2012.
National League West
It will
be another competitive season in the standings of the Natoinal League
West, but at the end of the day, we're predicting that the Arizona
Diamondacks, or good Oakland player south, will end up on top.
Either the Dodgers or the Giants could win this, although some
day soon San Francisco is gonna have to find more hitting to offset
that great one two three puch on the pitching mound in Lincecum, Cain,
and Bumgarner. We don't know if Melky Cabrera and Busty Posey are
enough, but then again, we didn't think they had enough hitting in
2010. We think the Dodger will get into the Wild Card playoff
game, and win it. Kershaw vs. Greinke will be a pretty good
matchup if things turn out that way.
San Diego and Colorado just seem to be too far away from the other three to contend.
