They say he was one of the toughest, grittiest baseball players in the history of the game, and he was
certainly one of the best. Look at those career ranks, the best Batting Average ever, and the 2nd most
Hits and Runs Scored. Also number 6 in Runs Batted In. A phenom from
the time he was 19, this Detroit Tiger had more than one in his tank,
he had a pride. And longevity was his game as well, batting 0.357 and
knocking in 93 runs in 1927 at the age of 41.
But then, by that time, he was getting used to the heights of the
batting average stratosphere. When you swing it at a clip of 0.366
for your career, you should think of nothing less. Not one season
between the ages of 20 and 42 when he hit less than 0.300. Three
seasons over 0.400. PEVA numbers for individual seasons
that peaked above 40.000 for three seasons between 1911 and
1917, including his 1911 season when he hit an astounding 0.420.
There hasn't been a lot of chatter about Ty Cobb lately, really not since the Pete Rose chase of his hits
record a generation of baseball ago. Ruth, Mays, Williams, and Aaron
get more publicity in the debates about best players ever. Maybe it's
because he was dissed by Joe Jackson in the movie Field of Dreams.
But whatever the reason, on the merits of the debate, Ty Cobb has got to be mentioned way up in the
ladder of success. Ty Cobb is the 3rd Best Batter Ever in our list of the Best of the Best.

What is PEVA?
PEVA is the acronym for Stat Geek Baseball's New Player Rating value.
This grade is given to each player and pitcher each season,
rating their performance on a peer to peer review. Six components
for pitchers and batters are melded together into the PEVA Rating,
which ranges each year from 0.200 to 64.000. For more information on
